About Be Beautiful, Be Smart

Prom day is one of the most memorable events in a teenager’s life. Unfortunately, prom can also be a period where teenagers are excited about their impending liberation and engage in spur of the moment behavior, such as drinking and sexual activity. On April 30th, 2011 B-Girls, Incorporated will host Be Beautiful, Be Smart, a kick-off to Prom Season 2011. Be Beautiful, Be Smart, will also commemorate National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (May 4th).

In the United States, about one-third of sexually active girls, between the ages of 15 and 19, will become pregnant. In 2007, over 6,000 teens gave birth in Chicago, accounting for nearly 35% of all teen births in Illinois. 21% of those births were to teenagers who were already parents. While teen pregnancy has been on the decline, education remains the biggest influencer in prevention.

Be Beautiful, Be Smart, welcomes teens, parents, community organizers etc. as we explore the risks of spur of the moment behavior and encourage young girls to make smart decisions on this memorable evening.

About B-Girls, Incorporated

B-Girls is dedicated to serving and enhancing the lives of African American girls, and those who identify with African Americans girlhood, through mentorship, health and nutritional initiatives, along with teenage specific career development, educational, and cultural programming.

We aim to:

• Embrace the legacy of strong Black women that paved a way for our success
• Encourage the period of development in "B-Girls" as they transition to womanhood
• Emphasize the importance of the extended family structure in African American culture

We strive towards a community where African American girls can embrace their differences and feel comfortable with creating their own identities. Girls will be able to define, on their own terms, their role in aspects of African American culture, such as music, fashion, and verbal expression.
